| The artist’s first one-man show
at Chapter Arts Centre in 1997, Cardiff. These works were the
first explorations of the use of light as a creative medium
in the transformation of the everyday. In Shoal, hundreds of
teaspoons swim across the wall, illuminated by a projection
which superimposes same size images of yet more teaspoons. The
real and the depicted become blurred as they mingle in the same
image. Object at Ease reveals four faint pools of light on the
floor, slowly moving. A heavy table is suspended by a single
steel wire, the only light source being inside the table legs.
We know a table is there but its movement and invisibility makes
us wonder what is still and what is moving.
Small Things Considered is a collection of found plastic
objects that are illuminated from within. They are all different
but their placement in a grid makes us see them as similar
until we get closer. Eat My Words is a series of light boxes
recessed into the gallery wall. The spoons are silhouetted
against the light whilst spelling out emotive phrases with
lettering cut very precisely from the bowl of the spoon. |
