| These works are part of a one-man show
at the Howard Gardens Gallery at the University of Wales Institute
Cardiff, 2003. Four pieces explored our relation to and our
expectations of domestic materials such as carpet and bricks,
using the gallery walls and floor as well as the space in between.
Light Wall is a brick wall where the mortar is replaced by
sheet acrylic, allowing a surprising amount of light to pass
through. The effect is a paradoxical conjunction of the solid
and the transparent. Swell is 25 square metres of carpeted
floor which undulates in a way that is reminiscent of both
landscape and the gentle swell of the sea. Whorl consists
of thousands of drinking straws which are bent at the knuckle
to create an intuitive pattern that flows around the picture
frame. Intersection is a 3 metre cube of plastic tubes hanging
in space that are inter-cut with a field of painted cocktail
sticks. At a distance the viewer sees only a floating plane
of colour until on closer viewing the individual elements
are revealed. |
